Surviving the fallout of a tough economy!

What can you, the contractor, do that others are not doing?
In a tough economy, those who do nothing to change the way they market themselves than what they did last year will get exactly that; nothing changing. Your customers are in a wait-n-see mode, so if you want to break the cycle, CHANGE YOUR APPROACH! Here are a few tips to jump start your spring! Make yourself more visible. Start by contacting designers, architects and builders in your area by introducing yourself and your work. Put flyers on bulletin boards with pictures of your best work and your contact information. Send out hand written postcards designed with pictures, a list of the work you do, and contact information to specific locations in your city. Your post office can help you determine how to do these mailings to certain neighborhoods, etc. When you get a meeting scheduled or have an estimate to attend, be POSITIVE, CONFIDENT, and offer IDEAS that are USEFUL and INTERESTING. Have a portfolio that shows PICTURES of your work plus SAMPLES that your customer can feel and touch. Explain WHAT they need and WHY, not as much as HOW you do the work. Be a PROBLEM SOLVER and be AMAZING with your ABILITIES! LISTEN to your customer, and remember you are there to BUILD A RELATIONSHIP and offer GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE...something that in this economy will get you in front of, and stay ahead of, your competition. With that said, always put your best foot forward. You don't always get judged on your crisp, clean appearance. Sometimes meeting a potential customer after a hard day's work with a little concrete on your jeans, makes the client feel important that you have fit them into your busy schedule and they see you must be in demand because you are busy working in a slow economy!
